Department of Energy Led Institutes for Manufacturing Innovation
Department of Energy’s first led Institute, PowerAmerica, headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina will be led by North Carolina State University. Announced in January 2014, partnering both industry and academia the Institute will focus on enabling the next generation of energy-efficient, high-power electronic chips and devices by making wide bandgap semiconductor technologies cost-competitive with current silicon-based power electronics.

On January 9th, 2015 President Obama announced that the University of Tennessee will lead the Department of Energy’s new Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Advanced Composites. Headquartered in Knoxville Tennessee the institute will focus on making advanced composites less expensive and less energy-intensive to manufacturing. A consortium of 122 companies, nonprofits, and universities joined together to contribute more than $180 million in non-federal funds, combined with the $70 million investment in federal funds creating the Institute.
